Overview

As outlined in the Think Tank proposal, the purpose of blog is to be an outlet for administrators and users to bring up topics pertaining to the wiki, including updates, new policies, new Think Tank proposals, projects, and other related topics. Through the blog people will be able to voice their opinions through another venue. Basically, this is for people who may not be comfortable in using the MediaWiki software or don't know how to use it, it's similar to a message board, except the subject of discussion can be more tightly controlled and focused.

We are now listed on Wiki1001, a beta version of a website that lists all wiki sites that are available online. Check it out and cast a vote, if you'd like. [?]
ACS Issue Resolved
Just received an e-mail from ACS's technical support saying that the error that prevented their userbase from accessing the WIki has been fixed. As for others from other ISPs that may be affected, please know that we're working with the affected ISPs as much as we are able. Good hunting! [?]
Alaska Communications Systems DNS issue
Folks, After receiving some comments on our off-server Case Orange blog, it appears that there is some sort of issue with some ISPs. Those in Alaska using the Alaska Communications System ISP will be pleased to know that their tech support team is looking into the issue on their end. Updates as ... [?]
Battlestar Wiki Facebook fan page
Our own DrWho42 has created a Battelstar Wiki fan page on Facebook. Check it out here! [?]
Wiki Frakr blocked on MySpace
So... apparently the Wiki Frakr is barred from being linked on MySpace. Consequently, any attempt to link to it from your MySpace profiles, posts, or bulletins will not work. We can't control it, but we can let you guys know about it. So tell Tom and his buddies to go frak ... [?]
Shane is a dig-a-bat
We updated to a new version of "CheckUser" extension that required editing of the database tables. Not realizing it, I forgot to do it for the other wikis as well. All wikis should now be editable. Sorry for the long long delay! [?]
Planet / Plusnet DNS issues
In talking to a few people who have not been able to access the website since our move, it appears that Plusnet internet service provider—serving the United Kingdom—has an issue with The Planet's DNS entries. The Planet, as you may be aware, is home to our two web servers. Since ... [?]
Battlestar Props Auction
Now that Sci-Fi Wire has issued their low-key press release-slash-news blurb about the Battlestar auction*, I'd like to take the opportunity to formally announce Battlestar Wiki's (and my own) involvement with it. If you check out the Battlestar Props website, particularly the "About" section, you'll see a familiar name there. Yes, ... [?]
On Yet Another Top Ten List…
Yes, we're on another top ten list, along with Lostpedia, WikiHow, and even Conservapedia (which I personally shudder at, it's worse than Wikipedia). Interestingly, no Wikia wikis made it on the list, from what I can tell. http://www.technospot.net/blogs/ten-wikipedia-like-sites-that-are-interesting/ [?]
MSDN shoutout
MSDN blogger "oldnewthing" noted the existence of Wikis and their spoof sites. Among them are Battlestar Wiki and Wiki Frakr. http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2008/07/08/8705315.aspx [?]

Guidelines

Specifically, the blog is meant to solicit feedback and is a central place for people to receive news and updates in regard to the Wiki. The following is to be covered on-blog:

Policies

All Wiki-based policies apply, specifically Civility, Assume good faith, and Official Representation policies. On the "dark side", the policies for banning and blocking also apply when policies are breached beyond the effective ability for dispute resolution.

What the blog is

The blog is ...

  • ... a centralized means of updating people on the ongoings of the Wiki.
  • ... a means of communication and discussion.
  • ... a gateway for integrating newcomers who are unfamiliar and, therefore, certainly uncomfortable with using the wiki's software frontend.

What the blog is not

The blog is not ...

  • ... a means to create or implement policy.
    • Corollary: All policies are to be vetted through the Think Tank process. Policies may be suggested on-blog, but must be dunked in the Tank for discussion and voting.
  • ... a personal soapbox.
  • ... to report Battlestar Galactica or related news. Although we do post news pertinent to BSG, Battlestar Wiki is, first and foremost, a reference and not a news source. Please do not confuse the two.

Blog posters

Both administrators and non-administrator level contributors may post to the blog; all administrators are automatically given blogging permissions as well upon direct request to Joe Beaudoin. (The assumption is that if they have admin duties on wiki, they can handle admin duties on blog as well. This does not work in the reverse, however.) Non-administrator level users must first go through a process called "Request for blog control". Essentially, this is similar to our Requests for Adminship process, but for the blog itself.

Of course, to do this, you need to create an account on the blog. Once you've created the blog on the account, give your name on the talk page for the project, if you are an administrator. If you are not an administrator, please go through the blog control request process.

Authors

  • None.

There is also a contributers level, which allows people to submit posts only. "Good" users become this status after they demonstrate that they don't break the blog rules. It's still up to authors and above to approve the posts. The default role is just called subscriber level.
